Durham Quilting is called such as it was a whole cloth quilting technique practised in the North East are of England of the same name. Quilting was encouraged in the early nineteen twenties at the time of an economic depression by the Rural Industries Bureau in order to get work of registered quilters. The twenties were a successful for the quilting revival, there were exhibitions of Durham quilts in the country’s capital and quilters were paid by the square foot for their wears. The Durham quilting technique is still used today and is the favourite of Jenny Barlow of Quilt with Jenny. She teaches courses and seminars all over the United Kingdom on Durham quilting for novice level quilters to advanced and professional practitioners.
