There are many quilting techniques which you can use to make your quilt and depending on what level of skill you are at you can be as complicated or a basic as you wish. If you are starting out you will need a cutting matt, a rotary cutter, a Omnigrid ruler plus scissors, needles and thread, some glass head pins and a seam ripper and you are good to go.
Some quilting techniques are Patchwork, this is probably the one you will have heard of, it is when curved pieces of cloth are stitched together to make a blocked pattern quilt. Applique is when you have pieces of cloth which is all different shapes and sizes, these are sewn together sometimes by using a machine rather than the traditional method by hand. Finally we have the trickiest one, embroidery. Embroidery you will know to be the practise of sewing images and pattern into a quilt block, images can be anything at all. Depending on where you are in the world you will be able to see local quilts almost everywhere you go in museums and heritage centres depicting a way of life which has now past along with new quilts made using modern quilting techniques.
